Raising the IQ on both sides of the Tasman

OK, let this blog slip once again! I'm so useless. SERIOUSLY!!

I'll use this post to announce what everyone probably knows already anyway, but if you didn't know, here it is! Next year, I'm moving to Melbourne to work for at least a year. Yep, I'm joining the brain drain across the Tasman - not that there's much of my brain to drain...

Lots of reasons for moving really - but surprisingly enough, pay is not one of them. I don't think my income will improve at all. Especially when accounting for costs of living when I already live at home in Auckland. Main reasons are for experience - I've managed to get an ICU run which I couldn't get here. Also for personal development - it's about time I left home!!

Not sure how long I'll go for. Perhaps just 12 months - perhaps forever - perhaps somewhere in between. Who knows...

With less that 4 weeks to go, my time left in Auckland is running out fast! I just have one more week at work, then it's Christmas, and then I'm off early in the new year! So much stuff to organise, I can hardly get my head around it! I'll post more about my efforts to move over - or lack thereof - in future posts!

Hospital slut

I picked up a couple of evening shifts this week - the first long days I've done during the week this quarter! Going back to ortho was fun but dealing with adults again was hard! Handed over to me was awful stuff like blood transfusions... congestive heart failure.... liver failure... acute on chronic renal failure... I couldn't even remember how much lactulose to chart! Then I couldn't just figure out the dose of paracetamol by going 15mg/kg/dose... ARGH~ what's happened to my simple little kiddies with bronchiolitis!?!?!?

Then I came across a needle phobic adult. Unfortunately on the adult wards you can't get a play therapist to come in and blow bubbles while the parents and nurses pin the patient down while he/she scrams in fear. One thing was the same though - the nurse had covered her in emla cream!! Anyway, In my true do-as-little-as-possible-when-on-call style, I just sited the expired luer and said it could stay in for another 24 hours.

My daemon!!

Apparently my daemon is called Antigone! Her form is taking shape!! I don't mind her being a cat but I don't know about the name...

Thanks for that...

... Sophie and Jeff. We have 23g butterflies too but don't you find that when blood is at a premium, the blood stays in the tubing and can't get anything into the syringe? Anyways, I've subsequently found out that the broken needle method isn't actually allowed anymore...

Oh poo.... literally........

OK, so much for this one post a day thing - looking back I actually failed on the first day, but that wasn't my fault! It was because I went onto nights and I couldn't tell what was today or tomorrow or just what the hell was going on anyway. Anyways, I was posting even worse rubbish than normal so probably better that I don't try to post daily... on the other hand nobody actually reads this trash so it doesn't really matter! Oh my giddy aunt what the hell am I doing??

Other important things have been happening in my life anyway. Firstly, I've had some insolent 5th yr medical students, who should be studying for their exams, play havoc with my street credit on Facebook. They cheat, they lie... then they stab you in the back!!! What's happening to the youth of today? The world is changing fast.

Secondly, I'm sure some kid on the ward gave me rotavirus. OMG 48 hrs of missery. D's & V's big time!! Started with V's, then soon the D's followed. Then came more D's, D's again and then V and then DDDDDDDDD............. well yeah, you get the picture. Friday was definitely what I'd call a Sad Face Day. Thankfully I managed to avoid the polystyrene cup with pink paedialyte and Mum using a 10mL syringe to rehydrate me. Or worse, the 120mg/kg/day of continuous NG paedialyte, which yes before any smart comments are made, would be more than 13mL per hour.

Anyway, I'm sure I know which kid gave me gastro. You know that feeling, even though you've seen millions of kids with the same condition, you're sure you know exactly which one gave you the bug... oh revenge will be sweet... if only he was old enough to use Facebook... his zombie would stand no chance... mwhahaha....

re: Your Brains

I love this song! I'm constantly humming it to myself in the wards...

I have Lag - jetlag without the jet

Urgh!! Pain... agony.... really struggling to adjust back to sleeping at night and staying awake during the day... I don't know if I'm coming or going... sleeping or getting up... whether I'm having breakfast, lunch or dinner... I hardly know what day of the week it is...
